Back to it...

Wow it has been over a month since I've posted. Well, I finally got back to it and have some updates.

I got the shocks apart and rebuilt. I was putting it off because I don't have spring compressors and didn't feel like buying a set for motorcycle springs. I then had a thought - I have that 3/8" threaded rod from before when I welded on the rear foot control mounts, so I bent it in half, looped it through the bottom mounting hole, and used a bearing separator as the spring clamp. This worked extremely well!

Rebuild included replacing a seal, an o-ring, and new fluid. The manufacturer did some testing and found that the damping fluid (fork oil) weight did not matter (5W, 7W, 10W, etc) but the volume being 80mL of fluid mattered. After more research people have found that ATF is about 11W and has better heat properties than fork oil. This is great because I used ATF in the front forks for the same reason and had about 200mL still left over.

I also was able to get around to 'deleting' the starter using a 1-53/64" freeze plug. The fit is really tight and works really well. I'm going to attempt to get the engine back into the frame and back on its wheels soon. I also hope to get a start on the exhaust this weekend.
